Spring Planting Underway!
Suddenly the sun is peaking out more often, the days are getting longer and a few months have passed since my last farm blog. Feb and March were full of preparing the soil for planting, starting a new batch of chicks for egg production and propagating lots of seed in the greenhouse.
Planting has begun and this year I’m excited to share a few new items. While most vegetable production are annuals, I’ve added a few perennials to the mix. Our first Black Mission Fig tree, 56’ of Jersey Knight asparagus and half a row of Crimson Cherry Rhubarb are planted for a nice addition to our organic produce.
I’m currently harvesting mixed lettuce, Swiss chard, and spinach, so stop by the farm stand for some fresh, organic greens. Red and Green Sweet Crisp lettuce, Napoli carrots, and Red Ace beets are growing nicely in the field too. This week four varieties of potatoes will be planted in between rain storms. In about 65-80 days you should be able to enjoy the flavors of Yukon Gem yello, Viking Purple, Kennebec White and Norland Red potatoes. Mmmmmm.
